Edge Family

Hi everyone,  my name is Katrina, and my family and I operate a cow-calf Hereford and Shorthorn operation in scenic southwestern Wisconsin. On this farm, I am the fifth generation. We raised Guernseys and Herefords for many years and sold out of the dairy in the mid-90s. Since then, we have added some Shorthorns during my livestock show career. 

We run crop and hay ground as well. We rotationally graze our cows on multiple pastures. We use bulls for breeding our cows with two different calving seasons, the spring and the fall. Spring is my favorite season. We calve on pasture from mid-April through June before resuming in the fall. Also during the spring, my husband plants corn and soybeans and begins making hay to feed our animals. My daughter helps spot new babies and makes sure they get their number. We use the cattle lettering system, so each calf gets its own identification number, and the year letter follows. Last year we had a Honda, Heidi, and Holly for example.

My daughter is the sixth generation on my family farm. We really enjoy watching her grow. Some of her bottle calves already are having babies, and she can’t wait to show when she gets older. For now, she just helps check cows and enjoys fixing things on the farm.   

I was an active 4-H and FFA kid, which lead me to livestock and meats judging on the national and collegiate levels. I use a lot of these skills today in my off-the-farm job at The Meat Schoppe. I help customers find different cuts to serve their needs and build rapport with customers. We just opened in May 2021, and my favorite snack is cheese and sausage trays.
